The USL Championship affiliate of the reigning Major League Soccer Cup champion added a little more international flavor to its roster ahead of its second season.
In the past six days, ATL UTD 2 has announced the signings of defender Wesly Decas and midfielder Laurence Wyke.
Decas, 19, joins Atlanta on loan with an option to buy from Costa Rican side FC Moravia. The Honduran defender has been with Moravia since 2017 and was loaned to clubs in Mexico and Portugal in the past. A centerback, Decas also featured for the Honduran youth national team, representing the U-20 side in Concacaf and World Cup contests in 2017 and 2018.
“We are excited to work with Wesly and continue his development, which has been fantastic to this point,” ATL UTD 2 head coach Stephen Glass said in a statement. “He mirrors the club’s profile and we expect him to fit in nicely with the group.”
Wyke, 22, is a bit more familiar with the U.S. soccer scene after playing his college ball at Furman in South Carolina. A native of Bolton, England, the 6-foot-1 midfielder was named Southern Conference Player of the Year in 2017 after notching nine goals and four assists. In 2018, he helped Furman win the SoCon championship and advance to the NCAA tournament.
“Laurence is a great addition to our team,” Glass said. “He assembled a very successful collegiate career, and now we look forward him taking the next step at the professional level.”
ATL UTD 2 will begin its second USL season March 9 against Hartford Athletic at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
