REIMS, France — The United States took an early lead once again when Megan Rapinoe converted a penalty kick in the 7th minute of a round of 16 match against Spain. U.S. fans in the stadium roared in approval and chanted with glee.

But two minutes later, Spain became the first team in the tournament to score on the Americans.

U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher played a ball out of the back to Becky Sauerbrunn, but there was a miscommunication and Lucia Garcia stole the ball. She got it to Spain’s Jennifer Hermoso, who took her time at the top of the box and rifled the ball over Naeher’s head and into the top right corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.
