Megan Rapinoe won the Ballon d’Or during a ceremony in Paris on Monday, adding to a year full of individual accolades after winning the World Cup with the United States women’s national team.
The Reign FC player won the prestigious award, given to the best male and female players of the calendar year, over U.S. teammate Alex Morgan, who finished third in the voting. England’s Lucy Bronze took second place, while fellow Americans Rose Lavelle and Tobin Heath finished eighth and 13th, respectively, out of a field of 20. Additionally, Sam Kerr finished seventh after a standout year with the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars and the Orlando Pride’s Marta finished 16th.
Rapinoe adds this trophy to a string of others in 2019, including the Best FIFA Women’s Player, which she won in September, and the Golden Ball and Golden Boot from the World Cup.
Rapinoe helped lead the U.S. to repeat as world champions, scoring six goals in six matches. She has since become a sensation in the soccer world and beyond.
FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the men’s Ballon d’Or for a record sixth time.
The Ballon d’Or is one of the sport’s most prestigious individual awards, and was previously FIFA’s award for the best players of the year from 2010 to 2015. The award was created in 1956 by France Football, a French weekly magazine focused on soccer. In 2018, the Ballon d’Or was awarded to female players for the first time, with Olympique Lyonnais’ Ada Hegerberg the inaugural winner.
