U.S. women’s national team coach Vlatko Andonovski named 26 players to the team’s roster for a training camp in Orlando ahead of the 2020 SheBelieves Cup.
The team will face England, Japan and Spain over the span of a week in the three-game tournament. Action will kick off on March 5 against England at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. The USWNT will then move to Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., to face Spain on March 8, then finish the tournament at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, against Japan on March 11.
The team’s roster for the SheBelieves Cup training camp includes all 20 of the players who played in Olympic qualifiers earlier this month, successfully earning a bid to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Andonovski added six players to the roster for the upcoming camp. Three of those players trained with the team ahead of the Olympic qualifiers — defenders Margaret Purce and Casey Short and forward Mallory Pugh, who was member of the 2019 World Cup champion roster. The coach also added Jane Campbell to the roster as a fourth goalkeeper, along with defender Tierna Davidson.
The camp will feature the first call-up for midfielder Jordan DiBiasi, who was selected for the team’s Identification Training Camp in December. The 23-year-old was selected by the Washington Spirit with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 NWSL Draft and she scored four goals during 22 games her rookie season. The midfielder has played for the U.S. at the U-20 and U-23 levels.
The SheBelieves Cup will offer a challenge for the team ahead of the Olympics. All four of the teams in the tournament qualified for the knockout rounds of the 2019 FIFA World Cup last year. The USWNT will gather in Orlando for training ahead of the first match, and Andonovski will narrow the roster down to 23 players before the first game of the tournament.
“As a team, we have lots of positive feelings coming out of Olympic qualifying, but I think we all know that there’s still a lot of room for growth for this group and there’s no better way to continue that process than to play teams like England, Spain and Japan,” Andonovski said. “Our end goal is the Olympics, but we’re looking forward to a productive camp in Orlando and the challenge of playing three fantastic sides over the seven days. The rhythm of the SheBelieves Cup schedule directly matches what we will face in group play at the Olympics, and the value of getting a test run against this level of competition cannot be overstated.”
