NEW YORK — Pro Soccer USA editor and co-founder Alicia DelGallo had a unique opportunity to visit the home of outgoing United States women’s national team coach Jill Ellis for an exclusive interview with the two-time FIFA Coach of the Year and World Cup winner. DelGallo joins Glenn Crooks to share the memorable moments of their wide-ranging conversation.
Ellis, an England native, coached at UCLA for 12 seasons and guided the Bruins to eight Final Four appearances. It’s also where she told DelGallo that she came out as a gay woman. She married Betsy Stephenson in 2013 and they have an adopted daughter, Lily.
“Jill told me she came out to her players and her staff when she had Lily in her arms, and told them that her, Lily and Betsy are going to live as a family,” DelGallo recounts. “She said she cried and it was a really amazing moment for her.”
