USMNT January camp: Gregg Berhalter calls in players from 17 MLS clubs

Twenty-seven players from 17 Major League Soccer clubs are headed to Chula Vista, Calif., for the United States men’s national team’s annual January camp.

The camp is the first under the direction of new head coach and former Columbus Crew boss Gregg Berhalter.

“I know this camp is the start of a process of building this group up,” Berhalter said in a conference call Thursday. “I’ve had the privilege of speaking to over 25 players in the last two weeks. I’ve been trying to get a sense of the past, but also the future and what this group is looking for. I think we can use this opportunity and this training camp to start the process and set the tone for what this group is going to be like.”

The Crew are one of three teams with the most representation on the January camp roster. Toronto FC and LAFC also boast a trio of players.

Goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who recently completed a transfer to Manchester City that will come into effect during the summer, is one of the few notable names on the roster, as well as Toronto FC midfielder Michael Bradley.

Berhalter called on Bradley to bring some experience to the squad, which features 12 uncapped players, including MLS Rookie of the Year Corey Baird from Real Salt Lake, LAFC’s Tyler Miller and Christian Ramirez, as well as the Philadelphia Union centerback duo Mark McKenzie and Auston Trusty.

“This camp is a slice in time,” Berhalter said. “It doesn’t represent people’s permanent positions. There are guys not called into camp that could’ve been deserving of call-ups. I’ve made some calls to guys not included in the camp and explained some of the reasons why and explained we’re going to keep monitoring all players as opportunities will be given to other guys as well.”
