CHICAGO — The Washington Spirit’s first-round domination of the 2019 NWSL draft came with a cost, which included trading away captain Estelle Johnson to Sky Blue FC.
The Spirit sent Sky Blue FC the 29th overall pick, defender Caprice Dydasco, goalkeeper DiDi Haracic and Johnson moments after the draft started in exchange for the third overall pick, which was used to select Stanford’s Jordan DiBiasi.
The spirit lose a veteran leader in Johnson, 30, who spent the last four seasons with the club. The defender scored two goals in her 51 appearances.
The Spirit drafted Dydasco in the 2015 NWSL draft. She made 58 appearances for Washington. Haracic made her way up from the Spirit reserves in 2016. Last season, the Haracic played behind top NWSL goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe. Haracic made seven appearances for Washington in her three years and earned Save of the Week award during week 22 of the 2017 season.
The Spirit finished second to last in 2018 with two wins, ahead of only one-win Sky Blue FC.
