WASHINGTON, D.C.–In its second matchup of the season against Utah Royals FC, the Washington Spirit looks to prove its three game winning streak is no accident. Both teams are currently tied on points atop the National Women’s Soccer League table.
Last week, the Spirit took down the Chicago Red Stars 2-0 without its five World Cup players. Goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe recorded her third clean sheet of the season.
“It was a good test for us,” Bledsoe said. “They are a team that has been on a roll and really dangerous defensively … So that was a good test and a quality win for us.”
With a three-game winning streak and top points in the league, it is no surprise that Spirit players are getting national recognition.
The NWSL May Team of the Month featured four Spirit players–Bledsoe, Ashley Hatch, Jordan DiBiasi and Sam Staab. Bledsoe also earned Player of the Week 4 May and recorded the league’s Save of the Week that same week. She has 26 saves this season in addition to her three shutout performances.
The best of May.

“Right now we are missing five players, so it is giving a lot of other players opportunities to step up,” Bledsoe said. “For this stretch, it is going to be really important that we use all of our players.”
Some of that depth has come in the form of rookies DiBiasi and Staab. DiBiasi has two goals on the season, including an Olimpico goal, and defender Staab scored one of her own in addition to her defensive performance in the young backline.
This week’s opponent served the Spirit its only loss of the year in an early-season matchup.
“We are really excited to get another chance at Utah just because it was a really frustrating loss,” Bledsoe said. “This will be a little bit of pay back and I am excited it is here in our own backyard.”
