WASHINGTON, DC–Washington Spirit is still enjoying the glow of its off-season refresh. Despite last week’s draw against Reign FC, the Spirit (1-1-1) continues to show a renewed energy.
This week, the Spirit looks for its first road win in 13 games with a trip north to Sky Blue FC (0-2-2) for the second meeting of the season. The Spirit didn’t have trouble dominating Sky Blue FC in the season opener, but two major pieces are now missing from Washington. Forward Mallory Pugh and midfielder Rose Lavelle joined the United States women’s national team for the 2019 World Cup.
Although Lavelle was not part of the first meeting between the Spirit and Sky Blue FC due to injury, Pugh played a crucial role in the final third en route to a 2-0 win over the New Jersey side. Fortunately for the Spirit, commanding defensive midfielder Andi Sullivan remains with the team.
Sullivan was one of the players who had a chance to be called into coach Jill Elis’ USWNT team, but missed out this time around. She is a key piece in holding together the spine of Washington and connecting the young backline with the attack.
Goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe is doing her part for the Spirit. She earned NWSL Save and Player of the Week for her shutout performance against Seattle last week.
Sky Blue FC is also missing a few key players due to national team duty. The New Jersey side will be without forward Carli Lloyd (USA), goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan (Canada) and defender Estelle Johnson (Cameroon).
