Amy Rodriguez of Utah Royals FC has been nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award, which honors the best goal scored from July 16, 2018, through July 19, 2019.
Rodriguez earned the nomination for her strike against Sky Blue FC in June, which was the game’s only goal. It was a solo effort that began with her winning the ball in her own half, then dribbling past midfield before shooting from 35 yards with her left foot.
“I am so honored to be considered for this award,” Rodriguez said in a statement issued by the Royals Monday. “It’s an indescribable feeling to be considered in the same class as some of the other goal scorers who are at the top of their game, but I am proud nonetheless to represent the NWSL and and grateful for the nomination.”
The nomination continues an impressive season for Rodriguez. The forward has scored eight goals, tied for second in the league as the Royals compete for a playoff spot.
Rodriguez is one of three women to make the 10-player shortlist and could become the first woman to win the Puskás Award. Cameroon’s Achara Nchout is nominated for her goal against New Zealand at the Women’s World Cup, while Billie Simpson of Cliftonville Ladies FC in Northern Ireland also made the cut.
The shortlist includes the likes of the LA Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimović and FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
- Matheus Cunha – RB Leipzig
- Zlatan Ibrahimović – LA Galaxy
- Lionel Messi – FC Barcelona
- Ajara Nchout – Cameroon women’s national team
- Fabio Quagliarella – Sampdoria

Three finalists will be decided by a public vote, open to fans registered for the FIFA.com Club through Sept. 1. From there, a panel of FIFA legends will decide the eventual winner, who will be announced at the Best FIFA Football Awards Sept. 23 in Milan.
