Sky Blue FC announced on Tuesday that the team will train at Georgian State University in Lakewood, N.J., beginning April 1 and will be there for the entirety of the 2019 NWSL season.
In a statement,Laura Liesman, the university’s assistant vice president for athletics and recreation, said the team would have access to “high-end amenities” on campus. Per the club, that includes turf and grass soccer fields, a fitness center, and “a fully outfitted wellness center that include a training room, hydro room, fitness center, laundry room, ice baths, team meeting spaces and full locker rooms.”
The announcement marks the end of months-long speculation regarding the status of a full-time outdoor training facility, something Sky Blue president and general manager Tony Novo said would happen in January. It adds to the improvements Sky Blue have been in the process of making since reports emerged last summer that the players were training in below-par facilities that included no amenities, such as showers.
The move means the club will be relocating from Sportika Sports in Manalapan Township, N.J., at the end of the month. The facility was being used temporarily for preseason training, as the team preferred an indoor location during the winter months. Sky Blue will return to Sportika one more time following its move for the final preseason match against the University of North Carolina on April 6.
Sky Blue will play its next preseason match against Rutgers at Sportika on March 29, and is set to open the 2019 NWSL season at Washington Spirit on April 13.
