NEW YORK — As Sky Blue FC continues to assemble its roster ahead of the 2020 National Women’s Soccer League season, it announced the re-signing of midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi on a one-year deal Monday.
Kawasaki joined Sky Blue ahead of the 2019 season in a trade from Reign FC, for whom she played four seasons in two different spells. Last season, Kawasumi played 19 matches and picked up one assist.
During a season that featured a lot of attacking rotation, Kawasumi played more often than not but saw her playing time decrease as the season went on. She did impress at times, though final product was not easy to find for her or Sky Blue in 2019.
“I am excited to have Naho play for Sky Blue for the upcoming season,” head coach Freya Coombe said in a club statement. “Naho is very technical and calm on the ball which suits the style of the team.”
Kawasumi has the ability to play as a forward, though she spent much of 2019 playing as an attacking midfielder. That should decrease competition in Sky Blue’s front line, but only slightly: the team’s current roster boasts seven other players who can play there, though many are versatile like Kawasumi.
The Japanese international joins two other teammates who also recently re-signed, Estelle Johnson and captain Sarah Killion, as the club rewards certain members of the 2019 roster while adding to it ahead of the 2020 season.
