Rachel Daly delivered a two-goal performance, helping the Houston Dash earn a 3-2 victory over the Washington Spirit Sunday night in front of an announced crowd of 4,045 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
It was the second win of the week for the Dash, who also recorded a victory on Wednesday.
Daly opened the scoring for the Dash (3-4-4, 13 points) before the halftime mark. After collecting a giveaway in the middle, Nichelle Prince sent a cross to a wide open Daly, who struck the ball past Washington goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.
In the 46th minute, Kealia Ohai split the Spirit defense and connected from long range to double the lead for the Dash.
The Spirit (2-6-2, 8 points) pulled one back in the 54th minute when Estefanía Banini struck from close range.
But another giveaway in the middle from Washington proved costly, helping Daly secure her brace and fourth goal of the season in the 78th minute to increase Houston’s lead to 3-1.
Turnovers continued to fuel the scoring, this time in favor of Washington when Ashley Hatch pounced on a giveaway in the final third and scored from inside the box in the 91st minute to cut the Dash’s lead to 3-2.
Houston’s Kristie Mewis exited the game in 19th minute and was replaced by Haley Hanson. According to a Dash spokesman, Mewis suffered a left knee injury and is awaiting further evaluation.
The Spirit remains winless on the road, but they return home on Saturday to host the Chicago Red Stars at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The match will be broadcast on Lifetime at 3:30 p.m.
The Dash host the unbeaten North Carolina Courage on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
