Sky Blue FC draws Portland Thorns, sets mark for longest NWSL winless streak

Sky Blue FC got a late goal from star Carli Lloyd, but it wasn’t enough to avoid taking over the record for the National Women’s Soccer League’s longest winless streak.

Lloyd was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute, but Sky Blue couldn’t tack on another goal and settled for a 1-1 draw at Portland late Wednesday night.

The Sky Blue FC winless streak reached 13 games and surpassed the previous record set in 2013 by the Seattle Reign, which went 12 matches before securing a victory.

The Portland-Sky Blue FC match drew an announced crowd of 18,237 at Providence Park, a season high for the Thorns.

Portland opened the scoring after Lloyd fouled Lindsay Horan in the first half, setting up a free kick from about 40 yards out and to the left of the box. Megan Klingenberg took the shot and Christine Sinclair forwarded it to Horan, who headed the ball home for a 1-0 advantage in the 45th minute.

Portland sits in a tie for third with place a 5-4-5 mark and 20 points. Sky Blue FC (0-9-3, 3 points), meanwhile, remains in last place and is seven points behind eighth place Washington.
