Orlando Pride defender Ali Krieger and goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris are engaged and will be married later this year, the couple announced in People magazine

Krieger, 34, and Harris, 33, have been teammates on the Pride since 2017 and played together for the United States women’s national team before that. Both are World Cup champions. Krieger was a defender and Harris a goalkeeper on the winning 2015 U.S. roster. Harris is still part of the goalkeeper pool for the U.S. and is training for the 2019 World Cup, which begins June 7 in France.

Harris and Krieger have been in a relationship for years — they first met in 2010. Though they did not hide how close they were and posted photos on social media, they never publicly announced their relationship until now.

“I don’t hide anything. Anyone who knows me knows what my personal life is like,” Harris told the Orlando Sentinel in 2017. “Some things you just want for your own. I don’t want anything in the media about my personal life in terms of my relationship. This is one aspect where I cut the cord because I want it to be healthy and I want it to be special, and it’s special between a small intimate group.”

But “now is the right time” to share their special bond with the world, Harris told People.

“We became more and more confident within ourselves, and then clearly within our relationship,” Harris told People. “We were like, now is the right time … and I feel like it’s a massive weight off of my shoulders. Finally, after all these years, I just feel like I don’t have to hide anything or feel like I’m not living up to the community I’m in.”

Harris proposed to Krieger on Sept. 15 last year in Clearwater Beach, Fla., about two hours from where they live and train with the Pride in Orlando.

“It was a really good time because I felt really on the same page with her, and really excited about our future and talking about our future plans with kids, and family, and things like that,” Krieger told People. “It just was a really good time.

“I was really surprised because it just seemed like another weekend getaway for us. I wasn’t really thinking about it at all!”
