The North Carolina Courage made a move Monday to improve their position in the upcoming National Women’s Soccer League draft.
In a trade with the Chicago Red Stars, the Courage acquired the sixth-overall pick in the 2020 draft and sent picks No. 9 and No. 16 to Chicago, according to announcements from both clubs.

The Courage now have the sixth, 27th, 28th, and 36th overall picks in the 2020 draft, which will be held in Baltimore, Maryland on Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. ET.
North Carolina selected four players in the 2019 NWSL Draft, but none of them had a large impact on the club’s on-field success this past season.
First-round pick Leah Pruitt played the most, featuring in 14 contests and tallying two goals and an assist. Lauren Milliet played in two games, while Hailey Harbison and Kaycie Tillman did not feature for the club.
Pruitt and Harbison both suffered injuries which limited their play. Pruitt, Harbison and Milliet are expected to be back with the Courage in 2020, while Tillman is now with the Washington Spirit.
The Courage won their second straight NWSL Championship in 2019, beating the Red Stars 4-0 in the final.
After the trade, the Red Stars now have the fourth, fifth, eighth, ninth, 26th and 35th picks in the upcoming NWSL Draft.
