For the North Carolina Courage, their season-opening match in 2020 will be a rematch of the 2019 National Women’s Soccer League Championship game.
The NWSL announced home openers for each team in the league Wednesday, and have revealed that the Courage will host the Chicago Red Stars on April 18 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The time of the match will be unveiled at a later date and tickets for the contest will go on-sale March 9.
To end the 2019 NWSL season, the Courage defeated the Red Stars 4-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park for their second straight championship. The game featured goals from Debinha, Crystal Dunn, Jessica McDonald and Samantha Mewis, all of whom return to the Courage’s roster this year. The match also proved to be the final NWSL contest for two-time MVP Sam Kerr, who has since taken her talents to England, signing with Chelsea.
The Courage will honor its 2019 Championship team prior to the kickoff of its 2020 home opener. Earlier this off-season, the club asked fans to vote on the style of its championship rings.
A week after their home opener, the Courage will play their second match of the season at the Houston Dash on April 25. The NWSL will announce the full league schedule at a later date.
Head coach Paul Riley will return for his fourth straight season as the head coach of the Courage.
Notable roster changes in the offseason for the Courage include the retirement of Heather O’Reilly, and a trade with Sky Blue FC that netted the club a promising versatile defender in Hailie Mace in exchange for veteran midfielder McCall Zerboni. The Courage drafted Texas A&M striker Ally Watt with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft.
