The Utah Royals secured their first road win and Sky Blue FC’s winless run continued Saturday.
Back and forth attacking proved pivotal for the Royals (3-2-5, 14 points) when a cross sent from Gunnhildur Yrsa Jónsdóttir resulted into an own-goal by Mandy Freeman in the 85th minute, sealing the visiting Royals’ 2-1 victory over Sky Blue in front of an announced crowd of 2,229 at Yurcak Field.
Diana Matheson, who scored her 25th career NWSL goal, initiated the scoring early when her strike off a cross from Jónsdóttir in the third minute gave Utah the lead.
Sky Blue (0-8-1, 1 point) equalized moments later in the 10th. Shea Groom scored her first goal with New Jersey after striking from inside the box via a cross sent by Katlyn Johnson.
The Royals could have scored their second goal of the game before halftime when Katie Stengel produced a shot from outside the box, only for it to be saved. Rachel Corsie tried to put away the rebound, but the shot was easily saved.
In the 55th minute, Sky Blue’s Madison Tiernan’s long distance shot went over the crossbar.
The own goal ultimately sealed Utah’s win.
