HOUSTON – Jamaica will open its 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Sunday against Brazil without one of its rising stars. Houston Dash forward Kayla McCoy will miss the tournament due to a knee injury suffered during a friendly against Scotland last month.
McCoy will remain with the Reggae Girlz during the World Cup and go through rehabilitation with the tea’s medical staff, according to the Jamaica Football Federation. Mireya Grey, who plays college soccer for the Washington Huskies, will replace McCoy on the roster.
The Dash selected McCoy in the second round of the 2019 NWSL College Draft, and the 22-year-old made her debut in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Red Stars on May 19. McCoy’s first international cap came in Jamaica’s 1-0 friendly win over Chile on February 28.
McCoy was born in Illinois. Her paternal grandparents hail from Jamaica. The forward spent time in the United States youth system before committing to the Reggae Girlz for her senior career.
