Goals from Sam Kerr and Yuki Nagasato lifted the Chicago Red Stars to a 2-0 win over the Washington Spirit Saturday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
It was Chicago’s first win since April 18 and snapped a seven game winless run.
Kerr, who leads the Red Stars in scoring, recorded her fifth goal in seven matches in the 25th minute after a free kick from Yuki Nagasato was cleanly saved by Kelsey Wys, allowing the Australian to score off the rebound.
Chicago (3-3-6, 15 points) doubled the lead in the 48th minute when Alyssa Mautz found Nagasato open inside the box. Nagasto struck the ball toward the bottom left corner of the goal.
The game was originally supposed to kick off at shortly before 4 p.m. on Lifetime, but lightning delayed the game until 9 p.m.
A crucial save from Emily Boyd denied a potential goal by Washington’s Ashley Hatch in the 92nd minute, securing the clean sheet.
The Spirit fell to 2-7-2 with eight points. They visit winless Sky Blue FC on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Red Stars return home to Toyota Park to take on the Portland Thorns on June 16. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. and the game will air on Lifetime.
