The Vancouver Whitecaps have announced the 2019 MLS regular season schedule. The Caps will kick off their 2019 campaign against Minnesota United on Mar. 2 at BC Place
This season marks the 40th anniversary of the Whitecaps winning the 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl. To celebrate the anniversary, the Whitecaps will host New York City FC on August 31, which falls almost 40 years to the day the Caps defeated New York Cosmos in a two-leg semifinal at Giants Stadium.
Other highlights include Cascadia Cup home fixtures in March and May, an all-Canadian tilt before the Concacaf Gold Cup break, and four of the last five games at BC Place.
The MLS schedule will include a break for the opening week of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, with no teams playing between June 14 through 21. The Gold Cup group stage takes place from Jun. 15 through Jun. 26, and the knockout stage will be played from Jun. 29 through Jul. 7. Whitecaps FC will not play during any of the official FIFA international matchday windows.
Vancouver’s 34-match regular season will include a home and away game against each Western Conference team, and one match against Eastern Conference clubs, including a first-ever meeting with expansion side FC Cincinnati on Aug. 3 at Nippert Stadium and a visit from Wayne Rooney’s D.C. United on August 17 at BC Place.
The season culminates with Decision Day, presented by AT&T, with all league matches kicking off simultaneously at 1 PM PT. On that day the Whitecaps will host Western Conference rival Real Salt Lake at BC Place.
Before the 2019 season, Major League Soccer announced a shortened playoff format. As part of a new fixed-bracket, single-elimination format, the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs will begin on October 19, and the 2019 MLS Cup is set for Nov. 10 almost a month earlier than was the case this season.
Finally, the schedule for the 2019 Canadian Championship will be announced at a later date.
