Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard received a red card for making a save with his hands outside of the box Saturday night in Sandy, Utah. Howard was ejected from the match, which his team eventually lost 3-0 to Real Salt Lake, and he will serve a one-game suspension when the Rapids hosts Orlando City April 29.
At first glance, the call from referee Joseph Dickerson looked questionable to those watching on television. A replay of the main camera angle showed the ball bouncing off what appeared to be Howard’s chest and not his hands or arms. But the official consulted his assistant referee, who raised the flag for a handball, and ruled in favor of handing a red card to the U.S. men’s national team icon because the ball hit Howard’s left arm before his chest. Trying to explain to my dad why Tim Howard is getting sent off
Him: "That makes no sense, it seems unfair."
Me: "Its @ColoradoRapids dad, it doesn't matter."
