ATLANTA — The Major League Soccer All-Stars trailed 1-0 in the first half, until Josef Martínez did what Josef Martínez does. He scored.
In front of his home crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Atlanta United forward followed through on multiple saved shots to finally push the ball across the goal line with his head and level the match 1-1.
The majority of the announced sellout crowd of more than 72,317 shot out of their seats and roared in celebration. Martinez hugged his teammates and then turned to the stands and gave fans a smirk amid their applause.
Juventus’ Andrea Favilli scored in the 21st minute to put the Serie A side ahead briefly.
“I feel very happy,” Martinez said when asked about his goal during the postgame press conference. “It was a very important game against a very important opponent. I’m thankful for this week, and the players’ effort, how they performed today.”
