TORONTO — Sebastian Giovinco scored twice and defending MLS champion Toronto FC beat the Montreal Impact, 3-1 on Saturday night at BMO Field to keep its slim playoff hopes alive.

Giovinco continued to be a thorn in the Impact’s side, opening the scoring seven minutes after kickoff as he chipped the ball over onrushing Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush after receiving a pass from Justin Morrow.

Giovinco had his brace in the 22nd minute, sliding a shot inside the near post after combining with Jonathan Osorio. It was Giovinco’s ninth all-time goal against the Impact.

Osorio went from playmaker to goal scorer to give Toronto (7-12-6) a commanding 3-0 lead in the 29th minute

One minute later, Alejandro Silva pulled Montreal (10-14-3) within a goal with a blast inside the near post after a pass from Saphir Taider.

After a wild, four-goal first half, Toronto FC were more compact defensively in the final 45 minutes to pick up three massive points. TFC are tied on points with D.C. United, six points behind sixth-place Montreal, who are just above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference.
