LA Galaxy: Jonathan Dos Santos injures calf, defense becoming a concern

Here are three things we learned from the LA Galaxy’s 2-0 loss to Atlanta United FC:

Injury bug bites again

Midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos sustained a calf injury during warm ups that was severe enough for head coach Sigi Schmid to pull him from the starting line up. Dos Santos has already missed two games this season due to a hamstring injury.  He will be evaluated Monday to determine the severity of the calf injury.

His brother, Giovani Dos Santos, also has dealt with injury this season. He played 27 minutes in the match against Atlanta after pulling a hamstring in the team’s March 10th road trip to New York City FC.

The Galaxy enhanced their roster depth in the offseason so that injury woes would not affect them as badly as last season. However, cohesion in the midfield needs players comfortable playing together, and the Galaxy have yet to start the same line up twice this season.

Kamara, Ibrahimovic aren’t main issues

The Galaxy have only scored one goal in their last three appearances, despite having a strong lineup on paper. Schmid attributes the lack of goals to the poor service from midfielders, rather than a lack of cohesion between Galaxy forwards Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ola Kamara.

“It’s not because those two [Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ola Kamara] aren’t clicking, it’s not clicking because the rest of the service isn’t quite there,” Schmid said. “We haven’t been able to step on the field and have all 10 players have a good game at the same time. There has always been missing pieces.”

Defensive woes are leading to lost games

Defense is beginning to become an area of concern for the LA Galaxy. Just seven games into the season, the Galaxy have allowed 10 goals and are sitting with a negative goal differential. While they have earned two clean sheets this season, allowing so many goals puts the team in a bad position to win games.
