Major League Soccer’s last hope in Concacaf Champions League was destroyed Thursday night in Monterrey, Mexico.
Sporting Kansas City lost 5-0 to Liga MX’s Monterrey in the first leg of their CCL semifinal at Estadio BBVA Bancomer.
The first two goals came in minutes 7 and 14 from Dorlan Pabon and Aviles Hurtado, respectively, who finished past SKC goalkeeper Tim Melia.
Jesus Gallardo made it 3-0 in minute 55, and then Nicolas Sanchez converted a penalty kick for a 4-0 lead in minute 70. Sporting’s Yohan Croizet committed the foul that set up the PK.
The final goal in the 76th minute gave Pabon a brace for the night and capped the impressive shutout performance.
Sporting KC will host the second leg of the semifinal Thursday at 9 p.m. ET at Children’s Mercy Park. Tigres UANL beast Santos Laguna 3-0 in the other CCL semifinal first leg. They play the second leg Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET at Estadio Corona in Torreón, Mexico.
