The Seattle Sounders capped off a dramatic comeback at TCF Bank Stadium Saturday night with Will Bruin’s chipped goal in the seventh minute of stoppage. The late goal helped Seattle extend its unbeaten streak to seven matches with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United.
Here are three key takeaways from the match:
Sounders move up table
The three points allowed the Sounders (8-9-5, 29 points) to leapfrog both Minnesota (9-13-1, 28 points) and the Houston Dynamo (7-9-6, 27 points) in the Western Conference standings. They were aided by a short-handed Dynamo loss to Sporting Kansas City.
Seattle is now three points back from the red line after taking 17 points from its last seven matches.
Bruin’s late strike shocks the team
Players danced and sang in the Sounders’ locker room after the match, elated with Bruin’s late game-winner.
Goalkeeper Stefan Frei said Bruin’s goal was a special moment for the team.
“I thought it was over at first,” Frei said. “It looked like he had hit it a little too hard, but once he started running off into the corner, I knew either he was a fool or he had scored.
“I hate using the word ‘drug,’ but this is that feeling. This is what you play for. You can’t get that any other way, this feeling. This up and down, roller coaster of emotions and then the exhilarating finish, the joy. There’s just no other way of getting it than playing a team sport like this.”
Kim Kee-hee subbed off with injury
Kim Kee-hee went down in the first half, necessitating a substitution to bring on Roman Torres in the 38th minute. Kim recently emerged as a stalwart for head coach Brian Schmetzer’s back line. The South Korean centerback made his 13th consecutive start Saturday.
Schmetzer did not offer an update on Kim’s status after the match, but he said more details will be available after Kim returns to Seattle.
