Rapids striker Kei Kamara suspended by Sierra Leone national team for ‘disciplinary reasons’

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Kei Kamara’s international career is on hold.

The Colorado Rapids striker, 34, has been dropped from the Sierra Leone World Cup qualifying team, according to a statement released by the association earlier this week.

“The Sierra Leone Football Association wishes to confirm to the public that a decision to drop Sierra Leone strike Kei Ansu Kamara from the National Senior Team Leone Stars effective today, 21st August, 2019,” the statement read. “Kei Kamara’s official invitation to join the Leone Stars squad for the Liberia vs. Sierra Leone World Cup qualifiers in September has been revoked with immediate effect.

“A further disciplinary hearing on the consistent breach of professional conduct by Kei Kamara will be conducted by the Sierra Leone Football Association.”

No further information was provided as to the nature of the conduct that led to his suspension.

According to a report from the BBC, Kamara has not been officially informed of the disciplinary action and will not react. A request from Pro Soccer USA for comment was not immediately returned.

Kamara currently leads Colorado with 11 goals scored in MLS play this season. At the international level, he’s tallied four times in 27 caps for the Leone Stars, all coming in African Cup of Nations.

In regard to the disciplinary action, Kamara has public support from at least one Sierra Leone teammate.

“Standing with you all the way big brother,” defender Mustapha Dumbuya of USL side Phoenix Rising told the BBC. “An individual that only wants the best for our country continuously gets mistreated, Kei Kamara. It’s time as a country to support each other and focus on what’s more important, not the nonsense that’s going on.”

The Sierra Leone Football Association has dealt with its fair share of controversy in recent months. Last October, Sierra Leone was banned by FIFA for claims of government interference, a ban that was lifted in June. In late July, SFLA chief Abu Bakarr Kabba was handed sanctions by FIFA stemming from a max fixing investigation.

In the past, Kamara has been an outspoken critic of the association and has been suspended for those critiques.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
