Orlando City midfielder Cam Lindley has been loaned out to USL Championship side Memphis 901 FC, Orlando City SC announced Saturday.

Memphis 901 FC, which is coached by former City goalkeeper coach Tim Mulqueen, on Friday announced Lindley was acquired on loan.

“I’ve known Cameron for a while now,” Mulqueen said in a news release. “He has very special qualities in his passing and does a great job of linking our defenders with our midfielders.

“We’re going to rely on him during the match to build and sustain attacks.”

Lindley started three matches at holding midfielder last season under former City coach Jason Kreis, but he lost out on minutes after a formation change from a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield to a 4-2-3-1. That, plus the rise of other defensive midfielders, meant limited opportunities for Lindley under Kreis.

Lindley didn’t play any league matches under coach James O’Connor last season.

Still, Lindley has had opportunities to shine. He was recently called up to the United States Under-23 team, which is coached by Kreis.

He started in the 2018 MLS Homegrown Game and earned high praise from coach Tony Annan after playing a full 90 minutes.

“Cam was brilliant. I thought he was very good,” Annan said after the match. “I thought his decision-making was excellent. He’s technically good. He was in the right place, he takes up great starting positions. He played as an 8 in the first half and was very effective and then we dropped him in as a 6… equally as effective.”
