Orlando City loans midfielder Josué Colmán to Cerro Porteño

After struggling to earn minutes with the Lions, Colmán is heading back to the club that gave him his start

Josué Colmán is heading back to Cerro Porteño.

Orlando City SC announced on Wednesday the Portuguese midfielder will be loaned to Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño, the same club the Lions acquired him from in 2018 as a young designated player.

The deal is for a year and a half, but Orlando City will have the option to recall Colmán in either the January 2020 or June 2020 transfer windows.

“As a club we feel this is a transaction that benefits both the player and the team,” Orlando City executive vice president of soccer operations Luiz Muzzi said in a club release. “For Josué, this gives him an opportunity to play on a consistent basis in an environment he’s familiar with in his former Club in Paraguay. For Orlando City, it gives us roster flexibility moving forward.”

Colmán, who will make $450,000 this season, has struggled to find a niche on the roster this season, playing just 144 minutes in eight games with one start. He did not score a goal and provided just one assist for the Lions. His performances this season come after a 2018 season during which he showcased his ability in during short stretches with five assists and one goal in 24 appearances, 10 of which were starts.

He missed most of preseason training last season because of a quad contusion.

His inconsistent performances combined with an injury spell contributed to what Colmán, 20, described as a difficult season.

“As a group, we didn’t do a good job and, individually, I had a horrible year. The expectations were high and unfortunately we weren’t able to meet them,” he told ProSoccerUSA on Feb. 8.

Those struggles continued this season, however, Orlando City coach James O’Connor recently said Colmán seemed to be turning a corner.

“He’s definitely making strides. He’s shown some glimpses in training,” O’Connor told ProSoccerUSA back on May 9. “… He’s someone that, throughout the end of the season, will have had a decent amount of minutes and, you know, hopefully for us, will continue with his development.”

That development will now have to come with the Paraguayan club where Colmán previously enjoyed success.

During his time with Cerro Porteño, Colmán made 48 appearances, starting 43 , and scored four goals. In 2017, Colmán made 32 appearances, starting 28 games, and helped Porteño to Torneo Clausura Championship.
