SANFORD, Fla. — Orlando City designated players Dom Dwyer and Nani “should” be ready for Saturday’s season opener against NYCFC.
Dwyer spent the early part of preseason training sidelined with a quad injury but has been training fully with the team over the last couple of days, coach James O’Connor said Wednesday.
Nani wasn’t present for training Wednesday afternoon, but a club spokesman said he’s was out of the country finalizing the paperwork needed for him to be eligible to play Saturday. Club EVP of soccer operations Luiz Muzzi told Pro Soccer USA the process should be done “by tomorrow,” meaning Thursday.
“We think both should, should be available for Saturday’s game,” O’Connor said.
Dwyer led the Lions with 13 goals in 26 appearances (25 starts) last season. Nani was signed as a designated player from Sporting CP but is best known for his years with English Premier League giant Manchester United.
Left back João Moutinho (hamstring) was training with the team during the media portion of Wednesday’s training session. Right back Ruan (quad) was training to the side. Goalkeeper Adam Grinwis picked up a knock last week in training and is in concussion protocol.
