New York Red Bulls sign Danish forward Mathias Jørgensen

The New York Red Bulls announced the signing of Danish forward Mathias Jørgensen to a multi-year deal on Tuesday, making the 18-year-old youth international the youngest rostered first-team player in 2019.

Jørgensen arrives via a transfer from Odense Boldklub in the Danish SuperLiga. The Red Bulls used Targeted Allocation Money for the undisclosed transfer fee, which Danish outlets report to be about $2.5 million.

Jørgensen will be added to the roster pending receipt of his ITC and P-1 Visa.

“We are pleased to welcome Mathias to our club,” Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett said in a statement. “He is a talented young player who fits into our philosophy and playing style. Throughout the scouting, interviewing, and signing process we became more and more confident in Mathias’ character, his team-first attitude, and his competitive drive. His decision to join our club as a young European player speaks volumes about the New York Red Bulls and Major League Soccer.”

The pacy Jørgensen arrived in New Jersey last week to meet club officials and visit the Red Bulls facilities. He had three goals in 18 matches for OB after making his first-team debut last April. Prior to that, he scored 28 goals in 25 appearances for the OB U-19 side and had nine goals in nine appearances for the OB reserves.

“I’m so much looking forward to being a part of the New York Red Bulls,” Jørgensen said. “I will do whatever it takes to achieve success together with my new teammates.”

The 6-foot-1 Jørgensen has competed for Denmark on the U-18 and U-19 levels. Last month he joined German Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach at the club’s winter training in Spain.

“We are really excited to have added Mathias to our team. He fits the profile of a Red Bull player and person that we look for,” Red Bulls coach Chris Armas said. “As a striker, Mathias gives us another dynamic option up the field with his speed, clever movements, and willingness to run behind defenses. In addition to his talent though, we love his attitude, humbleness, and his desire to work for the team.”
