Friday, the New York Red Bulls announced Chris Armas as the club’s new head coach with Jesse Marsch leaving immediately to pursue other opportunities. Those other opportunities materialized Monday when Red Bull Leipzig named Marsch an assistant coach under Ralf Rangnick for the 2018-19 season.

Rangnick is also the German Bundesliga club’s sporting director.

Julian Nagelsmann, manager of German club Hoffenheim, has already signed on to be Leipzig’s coach next season, and Leipzig president Oliver Mintzlaff said Marsch signed a two-year contract and will be part of Nagelsmann’s coaching staff next year.

“It was a decision that needed time,” Rangnick said at a press conference. “We have now come to the conclusion that I will take on the role of head coach, supported by the best coaching staff at our disposal. Ultimately, it came down to carrying responsibility — I know the league, the team and I speak the language. That isn’t the case yet for Jesse Marsch, so that’s why he will be working as an assistant coach.”

In three and a half years in New York, Marsch was the winningest coach in franchise history with an overall record of 58-35-25. He also led the club to three MLS playoff appearances, the 2015 Supporters’ Shield and a U.S. Open Cup final.

Marsch was always keen on a move to Europe, telling Pro Soccer USA in April he thought about a possible move within the Red Bull family and was working on getting his UEFA license through the Scottish FA.

“It’s no secret that Red Bull has clubs over there and there’s a lot of potential opportunities in some of the smaller leagues,” Marsch said. “Ambitiously I would enjoy the opportunity to test myself at a higher level. I’m not doing the UEFA course to simply coach in Europe, but obviously that is an ambition of mine.”
