New York City FC’s attacking star, David Villa is responsible for just one of the six goals produced by NYCFC in the opening three games.
His 66th goal in all competitions came in his 100th game for NYCFC – the game winner last week against the L.A. Galaxy. But Villa missed Saturday’s 2-0 win over Orlando City with an injured calf. So, Rodney Wallace, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi and Jesus Medina all took turns rotating at the No. 9 with positive results. Tajouri-Shradi scored unassisted while Medina’s gently weighted lay-off set up Maxi Moralez first-time finish to seal the match.
Here are some other things learned during Saturday’s match.
Quality depth in back
Right back Anton Tinnerholm was named to the MLS Team of the Week following his performance against the Galaxy scoring his first career MLS goal. He earned the praise of head coach Patrick Vieira for his play on both sides of the ball in the first two matches. Tinnerholm was sideline against Orlando City with an ankle issue and was replaced by Saad Abdul-Salaam who assisted on the decisive second goal and contained the dangerous Justin Meram with stellar individual defending.
Orlando City’s dominance is over
The Lions were unbeaten in their last three matches at Yankee Stadium and had an overall mark of 5-2-2 in the series entering Saturday’s match. With the 2-0 win, NYCFC has now registered consecutive clean sheets against the Lions having earned their first win ever in Orlando last May, 3-0.
