The Patrick Vieira to OGC Nice rumors intensified this week with a Tuesday report from L’Equipe.
“According to sources the deal is 90 percent done,” the report said in French. “The final 10 percent could prove to be the most difficult, but Vieira has never been closer to his departure.”
The New York City FC coach entered his second week of deflecting the reports, which also suggested Vieira will soon meet with the Nice CEO in New York City.
“Do you have any place I can take him for dinner?” Vieira joked with reporters Wednesday. “I don’t know what to say. I’m here, you see me everyday, you come in here to watch me do the training and I’m committed to what I am doing every single day. Like always, I can’t control what’s going in the papers. What I can control is what I am telling you. And – I’m here.”
Vieira said the continuing speculation has not distracted the club.
“I don’t think so – you may have a different opinion,” Vieira said. “The way we work doesn’t change. We had our staff meeting, we had our team meeting about what we are going to work on the field. Life doesn’t change – life is good.”
Franchise original Tommy McNamara said he agrees the rumors have not distracted the group, saying, “It hasn’t been really brought up or talked about much at all.”
According to L’Equipe, Vieira is pleased with the possibility of moving back to his homeland.
“This happiness is not necessarily incompatible with the joy of coaching Nice, and he has rejoiced, privately at the progress of the negotiations,” the report said.
Last week, Vieira told reporters that there is neither a signed contract nor negotiations with the Ligue 1 side.
“If I receive a call I’ll definitely let you you know,” Vieira said Wednesday.
