On Frame: New York City FC winger Gary Mackay-Steven dishes on Deila

“I think he’s a perfect manager for the players we’ve got here.”

NEW YORK — In this episode, Pro Soccer USA’s Glenn Crooks chats with New York City FC winger Gary Mackay-Steven and NYCFC Academy defender Prince Amponsah.

Mackay-Steven, who appeared in 12 matches in 2019 after transferring from Aberdeen is familiar with new City head coach Ronny Deila. The Scotland native played under Deila for two seasons at Glasgow Celtic FC.

“He’s a really intense manager and he likes his teams to press a lot – 90 minutes of high intensity,” Mackay-Steven said. “I think he’s a perfect manager for the players we’ve got here.”

According to Mackay-Steven, NYCFC supporters will enjoy Deila’s approach to the game.

“He likes engaging the supporters, walking around the stadium after matches — kind of like Jurgen Klopp, who sees the benefit of the crowd supporting the team. He’s brilliant at doing that,” Mackay-Steven said.

Amponsah, 16, is one of 10 academy players invited to the first phase of MLS preseason. He made his debut with NYCFC during the second half of a match against Brazilian side Corinthians.
