New York City FC signed 33-year-old midfielder Eloi Amagat as a free agent Wednesday after his contract with NYCFC sister club Girona FC in Spain expired. The deal is pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa.
“I am very excited,” Amagat said in a statement released by NYCFC. “It’s an important challenge for me and I have a lot of desire to join this club. These past two weeks, I have been reading a lot about the club. The team is in second, they are playing at a high level … I want to help the team and be in New York as soon as possible.”
Amagat also praised NYCFC coach Doménec Torrent and said the two have spoken many times in the last few weeks. They got to know each other well at Girona FC from 2005-06, when Torrent coached his hometown team.
“We were together many years ago. He was already a person that left his mark when I was with him in Girona. He is a mastermind in soccer and has a philosophy that fits well with my style. I’m very happy to be working with him again after many years,” Amagat said of Torrent.
Amagat began his professional career at Girona FC in 2004, helping the side gain promotion in 2008 to the Segunda División for the first time in 49 years. He then played for Lorca Deportiva and Llagostera before returning to Girona in 2012.

Girona earned promotion to La Liga, Spain’s top division, for the first time in history at the end of the 2016-17 season. Amagat played 16 matches during that campaign and made his La Liga debut on Feb. 16.
“Eloi has a lot of experience in Spain,” Torrent said. “He has quality to keep the ball and is able to do key passes for our striker and has absolute control when he plays in the midfield. He can play as a 6, 8 or a 10 and, for me, it is important to have versatile players that can play in different positions. He has a lot of quality and I think he can help us in the midfield.”
