Weeks after Giovanni Reyna made his Borussia Dortmund debut, the former New York City FC academy standout scored his first competitive goal.
And what a goal it was.
During a DFB-Pokal Round of 16 clash Tuesday against host Werder Bremen, the United States youth international completed a stunning strike. After cutting around a Bremen player, Reyna hit a curling effort from the edge of the 18-yard box. Goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka was left rooted to his spot as he watched the ball land inside the far post.
Reyna entered the game in the 66th minute for Dan-Axel Zagadou.
The 17-year-old made the move to Germany a year ago and immediately lit up the Dortmund under-19 squad with eight goals and eight assists in 16 matches across all competitions. He was called up to the Bundesliga side after the winter break and made his debut Jan. 18 as a substitute in a 5-3 win over FC Augsburg.
Reyna, the son of Austin FC sporting director Claudio Reyna, is the youngest American to compete in the Bundesliga, beating the previous mark set by Christian Pulisic.
