The Montreal Impact and head coach Thierry Henry announced the club’s coaching staff for the 2020 season Wednesday.
Kwame Ampadu joins the clubs as an assistant coach. The Irishman served as an assistant under Henry at AS Monaco in 2018-19. Ampadu also worked alongside Henry at Arsenal’s academy.
Another new face among the coaching staff is fitness coach Jules Gueguen. The Frenchman held the same position at the Impact academy since 2018. Gueguen was the club’s interim fitness coach in 2019 after Remi Garde’s firing.
Returning cast from 2019
Assistant coaches Patrice Bernier and Wilfried Nancy, as well as goalkeeper coach Remi Vercoutre will remain on board for 2020.
Bernier returns after serving two months as an assistant coach last season. The former Canadian international was asked to join Wilmer Cabrera’s coaching staff following Cabrera’s appointment in August 2019. According to the club’s statement, Bernier will “work closely with the club’s young players and their transition from the Academy.”
Nancy will spend a fifth season as an Impact assistant coach. The Frenchman also coached at the Impact academy since its inception in 2011.
Finally, Vercoutre returns for a second season as goalkeeper coach. The former Lyon goalkeeper retired from professional soccer and joined Garde’s coaching staff in December 2018. Vercoutre decided to remain at at the club following Garde’s firing.
