The Montreal Impact announced Tuesday the signing of Emanuel Maciel from San Lorenzo in Argentina’s first division. The acquisition will be confirmed after the central midfielder receives his international transfer certificate and work visa.
Maciel joined on a free transfer in what the Impact call “a strategic cooperative relationship” between both clubs. The acquisition comes in the wake of Ignacio Piatti’s contract termination which allowed the star player to return to San Lorenzo.
“We are happy to welcome with us Emanuel, a promising young player,” said sporting director Olivier Renard in a statement. “We hope to have forged a relationship with San Lorenzo that could lead to more players from that club following Nacho Piatti’s footsteps and making the jump to Major League Soccer with our club, starting with Emanuel Maciel.”
The 22 year-old spent two seasons at San Lorenzo but has only one appearance for the first team. He played the full 90 minutes in his club’s 2019 season opener, a 3-2 win against Godoy Cruz. Maciel previously featured for San Lorenzo’s under-20 side.
The Impact also acquired an international roster spot from the Portland Timbers earlier on Tuesday. Montreal sent $150,000 of general allocation money in exchange.
