MONTREAL — Ignacio Piatti stood out with his absence at the Montreal Impact’s 2019 season postseason interviews.

The Impact front office met with Piatti Tuesday morning and informed him of its intentions to exercise the club option on his contract for the 2020 season, according to a club spokesperson. Piatti then decided to skip the team’s end-of-season media session, per the spokesperson, who did not know why Piatti was absent. Neither president Kevin Gilmore nor sporting director Olivier Renard were made available to comment.

“If it was up to me, I’d be here no problem,” Piatti said during one of the team’s final training sessions last Friday. “But it’s not up to me.”

Impact players have been vocal about wanting their Argentine teammate to stay for the 2020 season.

“For me, it’s very important for Nacho to stay here,” Maxi Urruti said before Tuesday’s news dropped. “He’s an amazing guy and an amazing player. I texted him saying, ‘Nacho, you stay here?’ and he said, ‘I don’t know, maybe.’ Now, after this I’ll meet you at your house and say, ‘Nacho, next season come here.’”

Saphir Taider and his teammates had a little celebration with Piatti after Sunday’s 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls. After the game, Taider told reporters, “We don’t know anything.”

“We simply wanted to thank him,” Taider said. “You never know. We don’t make the decisions, so we wanted to have as much fun as we could with him.”
