ORLANDO, Fla. — Team X won the second match of the 2019 MLS Player Combine 2-0 over Team Predator to conclude Day 1 MLS Combine activities Saturday at Orlando City Stadium.
Team X opened the scoring early when Stanford University forward Amir Bashti capitalized on a giveaway from Team Predator and then struck a long-distance shot to grant his team a 1-0 lead.
“I like that we were able to bond as a team and play with such confidence,” Bashti told Pro Soccer USA shortly after the game. “From the get-go, we trusted each other, believed in each other, had the confidence to trust ourselves and play the game with freedom. We were disciplined defensively, but now we’re working throughout the week to show coaches what we can do and leave a good impression.”
Sergio Rivas of Seattle University made it 2-0 for Team X in the 16th minute after playing down a long-ball and making a run at goal to slot the ball past Marquette University goalkeeper Luis Barraza.
In the 85th minute, Team Predator came close to scoring when University of North Carolina defender John Nelson dished the ball to Virginia Commonwealth midfielder Siad Haji, who shot the ball at goal. But Providence College goalkeeper Colin Miller stretched out to make the crucial save to earn the shutout.
Earlier in the day, Team Nemeziz beat Team Copa 4-1.
The MLS Player Combine continues Monday with closed training sessions and scrimmages before officially concluding on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s MLS SuperDraft in Chicago.
