Minnesota United unveiled its 2018 kit Sunday at Mall of America.
The Loons’ new jerseys have vertical gray striping and feature a red button — symbolic of a Loons’ eye — below the collar, which reads “Forever United” inside. The logo of club sponsor target is emblazoned on the chest, with the MNUFC logo on the left breast and an adidas logo on the right.
Sunday’s reveal featured a large stage in the mall and a team store where the new kits could be purchased. Loons players will make appearances Monday and Tuesday at local Target stores where a limited number of jerseys will be available as well.
“First time in Mall of America,” Minnesota coach Adrian Heath said smiling as he scanned the mall’s four stories, all crowded with fans and spectators. “Is it always this busy?”
Heath gave a brief overview of the team’s offseason and preseason before the players strut on stage in the new uniforms. He told fans the club is working hard to be more successful in 2018 and have a better start than last year’s 0-3-1 MLS debut, in which the Loons were outscored 13-4.
“We’re 20 days in and we’ve done 44 sessions. So it’s been very, very tough on the players, but I’ve been very pleased where they are,” Heath said. “We’ve given them a really rigorous offseason program and we hit the ground running, so we were going to be able to tell from the first day if anybody had done the work or hadn’t. Pleased to say everybody is doing well. We’re probably a week ahead of where were last year.”
Minnesota wrapped up two weeks of preseason training and competition in Orlando, Heath’s former home, the day before the jersey reveal.
The Loons begin the 2018 season with two road games against San Jose and Orlando on March 3 and 10, respectively. Their home opener is an afternoon match March 17 against the Chicago Fire.
