LAFC inked a deal with midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye on Monday, re-signing the 24-year-old to a three-year contract extension through the year 2021, plus an additional club option for 2022.
“Mark is a really important player for us,” head coach Bob Bradley said. “From the start, he was open, he listened and he applied our ideas. Before the injury, he was improving week by week. He has a bright future and I believe he will be back better than ever next year.”
Although Kaye sat out the final months of the season due to an ankle injury suffered in late July, he entered the season as a central part of the midfield. He started 20 regular-season games, notching two goals and five assists. Kaye also has made six appearances for the Canadian international team since his first call up in June 2017.
His injury in the 2-2 draw against the Galaxy on July 26 derailed a solid first season with the club, but Bradley assured Kaye will play a major role in the midfield when he returns to full training in 2019. Kaye contributes another vital piece to the youth of the club, combining a wealth of international experience with a longevity of future play that remains the cornerstone for the club’s focus on creating a future in Los Angeles beyond its early expansion years.
“Mark-Anthony is a talented player who proved his importance to our team in our inaugural season that was only interrupted due to an unfortunate injury,” general manager John Thorrington said. “He possesses the commitment and ability to be a building block for our future, and we are confident the best is yet to come.”
Following the announcement, Kaye took to social media to celebrate his renewal with the club.
“It’s an honor to wear the Black & Gold and I’m forever grateful for this opportunity,” Kaye said. “I believe this is an important step and the right direction in my career. I look forward to coming back even stronger in 2019.”
