LAFC roundup: playoff predictions, celebrity sightings and more

It’s the final week of LAFC’s inaugural regular season and excitement is palpable among the team and the fanbase alike as attention shifts toward the postseason. Amidst the flurry of questions surrounding the playoffs — Who will they play? Where will the games be? How far can this team go? — however, one more game remains before the team can completely transition to a postseason focus. With the stakes high for Sunday’s game against Sporting Kansas City, LAFC has its hands full in this final week of regular season play.

Let the playoff odds debate begin

There’s still a slew of possibilities that could play out for the end of Western conference rankings. For LAFC, the main concern is clinching the top spot in the conference. Currently, the team trails only two points behind Sporting KC, which it will face in its final regular-season game Sunday.

With a win over SKC, LAFC would take the top seed in the conference. However, taking the top seed also relies on the outcome of the FC Dallas game against the Colorado Rapids. If FC Dallas loses, ties or wins with less goals than LAFC, then the Black and Gold will take the top spot. However, if FC Dallas clinches a win and outscores LAFC, then it will take the top slot in the conference.

Additionally, LAFC could claim a bye in the first round with a series of outcomes. As long as the team beats Sporting KC, it will claim a bye. Any of the following scenarios would also guarantee a bye:

  1. LAFC ties against Sporting Kansas City, FC Dallas loses or ties against the Colorado Rapids and the Seattle Sounders lose or tie versus the San Jose Earthquakes.
  2. FC Dallas loses to Colorado, Seattle Sounders lose to the San Jose Earthquakes, Portland Timbers lose or tie against the Vancouver Whitecaps and FC Dallas fails to outscore LAFC.
  3. FC Dallas loses to the Colorado Rapids, Seattle loses to the San Jose Earthquakes and LAFC wins the tiebreaker between Dallas and Portland.

This jockeying has been the main postseason storyline for LAFC for months now, as ot swapped in and out of various arrangements in the top three slots of the conference. On Sunday, it will finally conclude and the teams will set their sights on the playoffs and the MLS Cup.

Diego Rossi named to MLS Team of the Week

After making short work of the Vancouver defense with two goals in 10 minutes Sunday, Diego Rossi earned a spot as a substitute on the MLS Team of the Week. The first goal came in the fifth minute after a crafty through ball split the defenders and left Rossi at point-blank range, dead in front of the mouth of the goal, where the 20-year-old put the ball away easily. Nine minutes later, he cleaned up an errant pass through the box with a slicing shot, piling up a brace in the first 15 minutes of game time.

Rossi’s performance Sunday added to his goal count, putting him at 12 total on the season, only trailing Carlos Vela by one.

Celebrities continue to embrace LAFC

From week to week, it seems the celebrity tracker is always off the charts at Banc of California stadium, which has become the newest haven for Los Angeles stars to flock to on the weekend. This week’s addition to the Black and Gold family was comedian Maz Jobrani, who brought his whole family to Sunday’s game against Vancouver.
