Los Angeles FC will host the Portland Timbers in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. Coincidentally, during last year’s tournament, the Portland Timbers knocked LAFC out in the quarterfinals at Banc of California Stadium.
LAFC earned its spot in the quarterfinals after defeating the San Jose Earthquakes in the Round of 16 by a score of 3-1 at home on June 20. Diego Rossi, Adama Diomande and Carlos Vela each scored a goal during the contest after San Jose’s Valeri Qazaishvili opened the scoring in the seventh minute.
The LAFC-Portland match comes in a busy period for LAFC and is the club’s third of four matches within a 10-day span. LAFC has won its past two matches, the first on July 3 at Sporting Kansas City and the second on July 6 against Vancouver Whitecaps with an 11-2 aggregate scoreline. Player rotation is to be expected, but coach Bob Bradley has made it clear that the Open Cup is a priority for LAFC.
If LAFC were to win the match against Portland, the semifinals of the Open Cup are scheduled for Aug. 7 and the final would be on either Aug. 27 or 28.
LAFC returns to MLS action on Friday in Houston against the Dynamo.
