Los Angeles FC defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 6-1 at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. Forward Carlos Vela notched his 18th and 19th goals of the season in the 19 games he’s participated in so far, keeping him securely in place leading the MLS Golden Boot race.
In their earlier meeting this season, the Whitecaps handed LAFC their first loss of the year, but LAFC would not allow themselves to lose the second match to their Western Conference foes, as well. On April 17, Vancouver defeated LAFC 1-0, giving LAFC their first of only two losses this year.
Vancouver struck early by Yordy Reyna capitalizing on a mistake between defender Dejan Jakovic and goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega. Reyna was able to touch the ball just past both charging LAFC players and score the goal.
From there, the majority of the game tilted in favor of LAFC, starting with a Vancouver own goal in the 35th minute of play off a corner kick. Vela launched the ball toward forward Adama Diomande, who got a slight touch on it before the ball bounced off Vancouver’s Andy Rose and into the back of the net. LAFC’s second goal of the night in the 41st minute was almost identical, except that Diomande was the one who headed the ball into the back of the net giving LAFC the 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
LAFC began the second half just as they had ended the first: with two goals in the first ten minutes. Mark-Anthony Kaye scored a screamer from just outside the 18-yard box in the 46th minute, shutting down any chance Vancouver had of finding their way back into the match. From there, Vela notched goals in the 54th and 70th minutes, while Diego Rossi closed LAFC’s account for the night in the 72nd minute of play putting the score at 6-1 final.
LAFC have short rest heading into their next game on Tuesday at home against Portland Timbers FC for the next round of the U.S. Open Cup.
