The 2019 MLS regular season schedule was released Monday, with each team playing 34 matches from March to October. The Galaxy are looking for redemption after missing the playoffs during the past two seasons. Here are five matches Galaxy fans should mark on their calendars for 2019:
March 2: LA Galaxy vs. Chicago Fire, Dignity Health Sports Park
During their first regular season match of 2019, the Galaxy will face the Chicago Fire, who had a rough 2018 as well. Both teams will be eager to start out the new campaign in a better direction than last year. It will also be a second MLS meeting between the Fire’s Bastian Schweinsteiger and the Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic. On April 14, their lone meeting last season, Ibra got his first Galaxy start and the only goal of the contest.
June 22: FC Cincinnati vs. LA Galaxy, Nippert Stadium
This year is FC Cincinnati’s first season in MLS, so there isn’t much history between Cincinnati and Los Angeles yet. One of the most successful teams in league history visiting the newest club is a story in itself and a great opportunity for Galaxy fans to travel to see their team in a new city.
July 4: LA Galaxy vs. Toronto FC, Dignity Health Sports Park
During the longest running Fourth of July celebration in American sports, the Galaxy will host Toronto FC at Dignity Health Sports Park for their 24th consecutive home match on Independence Day. Toronto FC has been on a roller coaster during the past couple of years: they won MLS Cup in 2017 and failed to make the playoffs in 2018. They’ll be pushing to change their fate in 2019.
July 19: LA Galaxy vs. LAFC, Dignity Health Sports Park
Of course El Trafico had to make the list. One of the few bright spots of the 2018 season was the Galaxy remaining undefeated against their cross-town rivals. July 19 will be their first opportunity to face LAFC in hopes of maintaining the bragging rights in the Los Angeles area.
October 6: Houston Dynamo vs. LA Galaxy, BBVA Compas Stadium
The Galaxy will have to face the Houston Dynamo once again on Decision Day after a tough 3-2 loss to them to end their 2018 season. Dropped points early in the season put the Galaxy in a must-win situation toward the end of last year and the club is pushing to end 2019 in a different fashion.
