LA Galaxy earn 2-2 draw with D.C. United during Fourth of July showdown

(CARSON, Calif.) – The LA Galaxy tied DC United by a score of 2-2  during their 23rd annual Fourth of July match at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

The Galaxy were coming off a disappointing 3-3 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes only four days ago in Stanford, Calif. After going ahead 3-1 in the first half, the Galaxy gave up two second-half goals to earn only a point against their Northern California rivals.

The dos Santos brothers were still unavailable heading into this match, as they were making their way back to Los Angeles from Russia after the Mexican national team was eliminated from the World Cup. Also unavailable for the Galaxy were Ema Boateng and Sebastian Lletget, who were not in the 18-man roster due to injury. Forward Ola Kamara, who had been dealing with an injury himself, started the game from the bench.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring for the Galaxy in the fifth minute with a brilliant left footed volley from a Dave Romney cross. The goal, and style of the goal, gave the team momentum moving forward.

Midfielder Chris Pontius netted his third goal of the season in the 25th minute, but D.C. United had a quick response just one minute later. Zoltan Stieber scored his third foal of the 2018 season with an assist from Luciano Acosta.

Shortly thereafter, Bradford Jamieson IV had to be substituted out from the match due to a hip strain. He was replaced by Baggio Husidic in the 30th minute. From there, despite the high intensity of the match thus far, both sides were able to hold the other side scoreless to finish the half.

The match continued it’s quick pace into the second half, as the teams continued to battle for possession. Forward Ola Kamara made his way onto the field in the 68th minute, coming in for Romain Alessandrini, who has not played a full 90 minutes for the Galaxy since their May 30th match at home against FC Dallas.

The game was physical and fast paced, but neither side really had control of the match for the second half, until the 84th minute of play. Darren Mattocks scored the equalizer for his side, after dribbling through several Galaxy defenders in the box.

Defensive issues continue to be the theme for the Galaxy this season. Head coach Sigi Schmid voiced his frustration at the repetitive nature of the defensive woes.

“We need to be better,” Schmid said. “We as a coaching staff need to work harder, because obviously what we’re doing hasn’t been enough at this stage. And, we need to be better defensively. So it doesn’t matter how many more pieces we can add if we don’t get better defensively, it’s going to make it really tough for us. Offensively I think we’re starting to find a rhythm. I’m not really pleased in the second half with how we played offensively, but it’s just right now, I’m not happy with our defending effort.”

Looking ahead, the Galaxy will be hosting the Columbus Crew on Saturday June 7th at 7:30pm P.T at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. This match will be Gyasi Zardes’ first chance to face the Galaxy, after being traded to Columbus in the off-season.
