The LA Galaxy have named Juan Carlos Ortega, former tactical-technical coordinator for the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), as their director of methodology and development. Ortega will oversee LA Galaxy II and academy decisions moving forward.
“We believe Juan Carlos will be a great addition to this club and the LA Galaxy academy,” said Galaxy general manager Dennis te Kloese said in a press release. “Juan Carlos is knowledgeable and experienced, which shows in the success he has brought to the Mexican Football Federation and the prestigious clubs he has previously worked with. Juan Carlos also brings many important connections that he has cultivated throughout our region that will greatly support his work with the LA Galaxy.”
The club also announced LA Galaxy II head coach Mike Muñoz and his staff of Laurent Courtois, Jamie Harvey and Andrew May have been relieved of their duties with the Galaxy. Munoz was named LA Galaxy II head coach in January 2017 after joining the LA Galaxy academy coaching staff in 2013.
Subsequently, Ortega named Junior Gonzalez as interim head coach of LA Galaxy II.
Ortega joined the FMF in 2009 and spent most of his time with the youth national teams both as a coach and at the tactical-technical coordinator level. He also spent more than ten years with Liga MX power Chivas de Guadalajara in a coaching capacity.
